Komatsu PC200-8 Landed Cost in Lagos, Nigeria
The PC200-8 is listed at $25,000 FOB. That is not what it costs in Lagos. Freight, insurance, duty, VAT, clearing and inland delivery sit between the FOB price and the yard, and the Komatsu PC200-8 landed cost Nigeria importers face is the only figure worth comparing with a local machine.
Komatsu PC200-8 landed cost Nigeria: the five lines
| Charge | Basis |
|---|---|
| FOB | $25,000 |
| Ocean freight and insurance | Quoted by your forwarder, per unit |
| Import duty | 5% of CIF value (HS 8429.52, 2022 MFN reference) |
| VAT | 7.5% on CIF plus duty |
| Clearing, port and delivery | Local charges, quoted by your agent |
A worked example
Freight and insurance of $4,000 plus clearing and port of $1,200 produce the figures below. Neither is a rate you can bank on until a forwarder and an agent confirm them.
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| FOB | $25,000 |
| Freight and insurance | $4,000 |
| CIF | $29,000 |
| Duty 5% | $1,450 |
| VAT 7.5% on $30,450 | $2,284 |
| Clearing and port | $1,200 |
| Indicative landed | $33,934 |
Freight, the naira rate and the agent's charges each move the total. An all-in figure without a breakdown hides which of the three changed.
Why the freight is not a flat rate
A 20-ton excavator can ship in a container, on a flat rack, by RoRo or by breakbulk. The method changes the cost. A container reference rate is not a flat-rack quote, and a flat-rack quote is not a RoRo quote. Ask for the method and the dimensions, not only a number.
Lagos clearance also carries local charges that vary by agent and terminal. Request a line-by-line breakdown before you compare two quotes.
What to confirm before you pay
- The HS code your broker will file and the duty rate in force.
- Whether VAT falls on the CIF value plus duty.
- The agent's full schedule of fees, not a lump sum.
- The age limit or inspection requirement for used machinery, if any.
- Actual dimensions and the loading method.
Is it still cheaper than buying locally?
Compare the landed total plus a repair reserve with the PC200-8 price Nigeria dealers ask for a similar machine. A $25,000 FOB unit that lands near $34,000 is only a good deal if the local equivalent costs more or cannot be found. The import duty Nigeria excavator buyers handle is one line of the bill; the comparison has to use all of them.
Common questions
Can you quote CIF Lagos?
Yes. Send the destination port and we will price the load-out and the sea freight for this unit.
Is duty included in the FOB price?
No. The FOB price stops at the load port; duty, VAT and clearing fall on the import side.
Can you arrange clearing?
We can introduce a forwarder, but the import clearance is arranged by your agent in Nigeria.
Apapa, Tin Can and the queue behind the gate
Lagos does not offer one clearance experience. Apapa and Tin Can are separate terminals with separate operators, separate yard systems and separate congestion patterns. Whichever terminal holds your unit decides which agent can collect it, which gate pass applies and how long the truck idles outside. Before agreeing a rate, ask the agent where the line discharges and whether that agent holds a standing account at that terminal. Strength at one gate says little about the other.
Documents that gate the release
The Nigerian file has more stages than most first-time importers expect, and each stage waits its turn.
- Form M registered ahead of shipment, with the proforma invoice attached.
- PAAR issued once the declaration clears processing; the terminal will not release without it.
- Bill of lading in the correct consignee name, endorsed properly.
- Certificate of origin consistent with the invoice and the machine.
- Inspection status for used machinery, where your broker says a regime applies.
Request the current requirement list in writing. Practice at these ports has changed more than once, and a checklist from an earlier shipment is not evidence of anything.
Who this machine suits
A 20-ton tracked excavator is a poor purchase for a contractor whose work is residential footings and narrow right-of-way trenching; the transport width and the tail swing both punish that job. It earns its place on site clearance, road building, drainage and quarry support, where a 6,000-hour unit can hold a full shift and the model is familiar to local fitters. The PC200-8 is common enough that a mechanic in Lagos or Abuja has probably worked on one. That familiarity is part of what you are buying, and it is worth a call to your own mechanic before you ask anyone for a price.
When to walk away
Three signals should end a Lagos deal: a seller who will not send a cold-start video, an agent who offers one all-in figure with no breakdown, and a schedule that assumes the vessel beats the documents. Any of the three converts a landed-cost estimate into a guess. An itemised quote, a clean document file and a dated plan are worth more than a small concession on the machine itself.
