Komatsu PC200-7 vs PC200-8: $24,000 for 9,800 Hours?

Two real units · FOB China · 45 Komatsu machines in stock

The older PC200-7 is a 2007 machine with 9,800 hours at $24,000 FOB. The newer used Komatsu PC200-8 is a 2014 machine with 6,000 hours at $25,000 FOB. In the Komatsu PC200-7 vs PC200-8 comparison, a $1,000 difference for seven years and 3,800 hours looks strange. It is a lesson in how used excavator pricing works.

This is not a claim that one unit is better, only the comparison to run first.

Why the used Komatsu PC200-7 price is close

The used Komatsu PC200-7 price rests on a following in some markets: it is simpler electronically than later machines, and mechanics who know it can repair it without a laptop. The PC200-8 is newer and has more electronics, which some buyers value and some avoid.

Demand is local: where the PC200-7 is the familiar machine it may sell close to a newer unit, and where buyers want the newest model they can afford, the PC200-8 is easier to sell. The sticker does not tell you which market you are in.

Generation differences that reach the invoice

The PC200-7 and the PC200-8 are not one machine with two badges. The later model carries more electronic control, which changes who can repair it and which parts the job needs. Before choosing, ask whether your local workshop can read the fault codes, and whether filters, sensors and hydraulic parts are available without a long import wait. A machine your mechanic cannot diagnose is a machine that sits.

What the PC200-8 buys

The newer machine gives seven more years of production and 3,800 fewer hours on the meter. If the wear supports the reading, that is real value: more remaining life on the major components and a better resale position in most markets.

It also brings more electronics: ask whether the local workshop can diagnose it and whether parts are available.

The 2014 PC200-8: 6,000 hours, $25,000 FOB. Newer and lower-hour, but inspect the electronics and hydraulics.

What the PC200-7 buys

The PC200-7 is a simpler machine, and that can matter in a market with limited dealer support. A repair needing a specialist laptop is a different risk from one a good local mechanic can handle. The older unit may also be cheaper to insure or easier to fit into a similar fleet.

But 9,800 hours is not low. The undercarriage, hydraulic pump and swing system are the items to price. A $24,000 machine needing a $6,000 undercarriage is not cheaper than a $25,000 machine that does not.

The hours-per-year figure nobody checks

Divide the meter by the age. On the listed figures, both average about 500 hours a year. That is low utilization, which suits a rental fleet, a municipal yard or a contractor running several units. Wear is spread across years rather than concentrated in one hard campaign, so maintenance history matters more than the total on the clock.

The inspection that settles it

Run the same checks on both units:

  • Cold start and smoke; listen for abnormal noise.
  • Hydraulic cycle: boom, arm, bucket, travel and swing.
  • Undercarriage: shoes, links, sprockets, rollers and idlers.
  • Pins and bushes at the bucket, arm and boom.
  • Boom and arm welds; fresh paint that may hide a repair.
  • Hour meter, serial plate and any service records.
A low price is not a diagnosis. Ask for the evidence on the actual stock number, and treat a missing record as unknown, not good.

Transport and landed cost

Both are 20-ton Komatsu machines, so loading options are similar. Get a freight quote for each to your port, and add duty, clearing and inland transport. The $1,000 gap can change after freight, especially if one unit sits in a different yard or needs a different loading plan.

Do not choose on the FOB number alone, but on the landed cost plus the repair reserve.

After the deposit: parts and resale

The purchase price is the first cost, not the last. A PC200-7 with strong local parts support can be the cheaper machine to own at 9,800 hours, because each repair is known. A PC200-8 protects resale where buyers want the newer model, but only if the electronics stay healthy and the buyer base can service them. Ask both sellers for a parts list for the next major service and a workshop that has done the job. Those answers belong in the price comparison.

Komatsu PC200-7 vs PC200-8: which one fits your work?

Choose the PC200-7 if you want a simpler machine, your local workshop knows it, and the inspection shows life left in the major components. Choose the PC200-8 for the newer unit, lower hours and better resale, if you can support the electronics.

Neither suits every buyer: the right answer is the unit with the cleanest evidence and the lowest total cost.

The rule in one line

Buy the unit whose evidence is complete and whose parts you can service; use the year only to break a tie.

Questions buyers ask

Are both units available?

They are listed as in stock in China. Confirm availability before you commit.

Is the PC200-7 too old?

Age alone does not decide. Condition, parts support and the work you need it for matter more.

Can you quote CIF?

Yes. Send the destination port and we will quote the loading method and freight for each machine.

Compare the evidence, not the year.

Ask for the cold-start video, undercarriage photos and hydraulic cycle for both units. Name your port and we will confirm both units and their FOB prices on WhatsApp.
